A gentle way to begin your meditation journey
If you’re new to meditation – or curious but not quite sure where to start – a beginner meditation retreat is one of the best ways to begin.
Unlike a drop-in class, a short day retreat gives you the time and space to slow down, settle your mind, and really experience meditation for yourself. There’s no pressure, no expectations, and no prior knowledge needed – just a warm, supportive environment where everything is explained clearly and practiced together.
This Beginners Meditation Retreat is designed to help you feel confident, relaxed, and inspired as you take your first steps on the meditation path.
What we’ll be meditating on: Meditations for a Kind Heart
During the retreat, the guided sessions will be based on Meditations for a Kind Heart, a series of simple meditations drawn from the teachings of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.
These meditations help us open our heart to others and discover the peace and happiness that naturally arise when we relate to people with kindness, patience and love.
Throughout the day you will be guided step-by-step through meditations that help you:
- Develop a warm and peaceful attitude towards others, beginning with those closest to us and gradually extending this kindness more widely
- Let go of self-centred thoughts that can make the mind feel tight, heavy or unhappy
- Cultivate cherishing love, a kind heart that sincerely wishes others to be happy
- Bring kindness into daily life, so that our relationships become more harmonious and our mind becomes lighter and more joyful
By becoming familiar with these meditations, we begin to see that kindness is not a weakness or something extra we add to our life — it is a powerful inner quality that makes our own mind peaceful and brings real benefit to the people around us.
The retreat will also include practical guidance on how to begin a meditation practice and how to maintain it in daily life, so that the experience of calm and clarity can continue long after the retreat.
These meditations are simple, practical and suitable for everyone, whether you are new to meditation or looking to deepen your understanding.
Why a beginner retreat is such a great place to start
A short retreat like this offers something many people don’t realise they need: unrushed time to learn and practice.
During the day you’ll:
- Receive clear explanations of meditation basics
- Be guided through several short, comfortable meditation sessions
- Have time to rest, reflect, and let the teachings sink in
- Be supported by an experienced teacher in a friendly group setting
Many people find that even a single day of retreat practice helps them feel lighter, clearer, and more encouraged than weeks of trying to meditate on their own.
A calm day away — without going away
Held at our peaceful meditation centre in Spring Hill, this retreat offers a genuine break from everyday busyness – without needing to travel or take time off work.
There will be space for quiet reflection, gentle guidance throughout the day, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels at ease. Whether you’re feeling stressed, curious, overwhelmed, or simply ready to do something kind for yourself, this retreat is a wonderful place to begin.
Everyone is welcome
You don’t need to be Buddhist, spiritual, or experienced.
You don’t need to be “good at meditation.”
You just need an open mind and a willingness to try.
This beginner retreat is suitable for anyone looking for a calm, meaningful, and supportive introduction to meditation.
