Overcoming Anxiety with Buddhist Wisdom
Anxiety is a common experience in modern life. Worrying about the future, replaying the past, and feeling overwhelmed by uncertainty can leave the mind tense and exhausted. According to Buddhist wisdom, anxiety does not come from the world around us, but from how our mind relates to it. This understanding gives us great hope: if anxiety arises in the mind, it can also be reduced and eventually overcome by training the mind.
In Kadampa Buddhism, as taught by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, inner peace is not something we wait for — it is something we actively cultivate.
Understanding the real source of anxiety
From a Buddhist perspective, anxiety arises when the mind grasps at things as being solid, fixed, or out of our control. We worry because we strongly identify with outcomes, expectations, and fears, believing they define our happiness or safety.
Kadampa teachings explain that external situations are not the true cause of our distress. Two people can experience the same situation, yet respond very differently. The difference lies in the mind. When we understand this, we stop blaming circumstances and begin working with the one place where real change is possible — our own awareness.
Learning to rest the mind
One of the most practical tools offered in Kadampa Buddhism is meditation. Meditation is not about forcing the mind to be blank or escaping from life. It is a gentle process of becoming familiar with a peaceful, clear state of mind.
By regularly practising simple breathing meditation, we learn to step back from anxious thoughts rather than being pulled along by them. Over time, this creates space. Thoughts lose their power, emotions soften, and the mind naturally becomes more stable and relaxed.
Even a few minutes each day can begin to change our relationship with anxiety.
Changing our perspective
Kadampa Buddhism emphasises wisdom — particularly understanding the impermanent and dependent nature of all experiences. Anxiety often comes from believing that problems are permanent or overwhelming. Buddhist wisdom helps us see that feelings, situations, and even our sense of self are constantly changing.
When we realise that anxious thoughts are not facts, but passing mental events, we stop identifying so strongly with them. This shift in perspective brings relief and confidence. We begin to trust that we can remain peaceful even when life is uncertain.
A path to lasting inner peace...
Overcoming anxiety is not about suppressing feelings or becoming someone else. It is about learning to relate to your mind with wisdom, patience, and kindness. Kadampa Buddhism offers a clear, practical path that fits into everyday life — whether at work, at home, or in difficult moments.
With regular practice, anxiety gradually loses its grip, and a deep sense of inner peace and confidence naturally arises. This peace is not dependent on perfect conditions — it comes from within.
If anxiety is part of your life right now, you don’t need to wait for the “perfect” course.
