Meditation Workshop – Kadampa Meditation Centre Brisbane

Saturday 6 June | 10am-1pm | $50 (includes morning tea)

Learn how to eliminate the causes of suffering and make a special connection with the 35 Buddhas who adorn the walls of the Kadampa city Temple in Brisbane, through engaging in the powerful purification practice of Confession Buddhas.

Most of us spend a lot of our time and energy trying to avoid suffering by changing the world around us. But the main cause of our difficulties isn’t other people or external things, it is the ripening of potentials left in our mind from negative actions, or ‘karma’, of the past. Sometimes these appear as obstacles in our life, difficulties in meditation, or recurring problems in our relationships and inner peace.

Buddha explained that these obstacles are not fixed or permanent. Through the practice of purification, we can remove the negative potentials of past actions before they produce suffering, and we can create causes for a peaceful and meaningful future.

During this workshop, we will explore the powerful purification practice of The Sutra of the Three Superior Heaps, or 35 Confession Buddhas, a traditional Buddhist method used for centuries to purify negative karma and strengthen our spiritual potential.

A key part of this practice is prostration, a profound spiritual exercise that brings together the actions of body, speech and mind in a powerful process of inner transformation.

As Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche explains:

“Prostrations are very precious. If we do prostrations regularly it will be good for our health, our mind will become happy and clear, we will accumulate vast amounts of merit, and we will purify our negative karma.”

— Joyful Path of Good Fortune

Suitable for all physical abilities, prostrations to the 35 Confession Buddhas have unequalled power to purify negative karma and remove the inner obstacles that hold us back from fulfilling our true potential.

Through learning and engaging in this practice we can begin to experience a lighter, clearer mind. Gradually our meditation becomes easier, our daily problems diminish, and deeper spiritual insights begin to arise naturally.

This workshop will include:

  • Clear teachings on the meaning and purpose of purification
  • How to purify through practice of the 35 Confession Buddhas
  • Practical advice on how to integrate this practice into daily life

Suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Everyone is welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions about Purifying Past Actions (Karma Purification Workshop)

Do I need to be Buddhist to attend this workshop?

Not at all. This workshop is open to everyone. The teachings come from Buddhist wisdom, but they are presented in a practical, accessible way that anyone can benefit from—regardless of background or belief.

What does “purifying past actions” actually mean?

In Buddhist teachings, our past actions (karma) leave imprints on the mind that can later ripen as difficulties or obstacles. Purification is a method for reducing or removing these imprints, helping us experience greater peace, clarity, and freedom in our life.

Will I have to do physical prostrations?

No—prostrations are part of the traditional practice, but they are completely optional. Everything will be clearly explained, and you’re free to engage at your own level of comfort. Many people simply participate mentally or in a seated way and still find the practice deeply beneficial.

What is the 35 Confession Buddhas practice?

This is a traditional purification practice taught by Buddha, also known as The Sutra of the Three Superior Heaps. It involves reflecting on our actions, generating a sincere wish to improve, and connecting with the compassionate energy of the 35 Buddhas to help purify the mind.

Will the workshop be guided, or do I need to know the practice already?

Everything is guided step by step. You don’t need any prior experience. The teacher will explain the meaning behind the practice and gently lead you through it, so you can feel confident and supported throughout.

What if I feel uncomfortable thinking about past actions?

That’s very natural. This practice isn’t about guilt or self-judgment. It’s about understanding, compassion, and letting go. Many people find it surprisingly uplifting—like putting something down that they’ve been carrying for a long time.

What are the benefits of doing purification practice?

Regular purification can help reduce inner obstacles, ease feelings of regret, and support progress in meditation. Over time, it creates the causes for a lighter, more positive mind and a more meaningful, peaceful future.

What to Expect

The day will be divided into two one and a quarter-hour sessions, each including gentle teachings, guided meditation, and time to reflect. Morning tea is included, and there will be relaxed opportunities between sessions to connect with like-minded people in a friendly, welcoming environment.

We meditate in our fully air-conditioned, purpose-built meditation room, seated on comfortable chairs (or cushions on the floor if you prefer). There’s no need to bring anything special — just wear comfortable clothes and come ready to enjoy a peaceful, meaningful day.

You are welcome to stay on to engage in the actual practice of Confession Buddhas as described in the workshop.
